The Shipt sign up process is really quite easy. It is not as simple as Doordash, Instacart or Postmates - but it is by no means difficult. A new shopper must enter some personal information, take a quick interview video (three short questions) and pass a background check. Most Shipt shoppers can get started in a matter of days. For me, it took less than a week between signing up and starting my first batch.
It’s easy to select select available orders in the app, you can choose orders by location and preview the estimated pay along with the total number of items, item categories as well as estimated shopping time. This information makes it easy to choose orders that will benefit you as a shopper!
You can also schedule hours ahead of time up to a week in advance through the Shipt Shopper app. Some shoppers prefer to schedule this way as opposed to selecting individual orders in the app. Personally, I like to select orders individually so that I can filter out the low paying offers.
Pay is calculated by adding the base rate of $5 per order + 7.5% of customer receipt total + promotional pay + customer tip.
Here’s a look at my pay for a single order in Seattle. It took my about an hour to complete and I drove around 3 miles ($.58 per mile in expenses).
The Shipt app is very easy for shoppers to navigate. Once you’ve selected an order (covered above) there are just a few things that you need to know.
Shopping with Shipt is definitely worth it if you enjoy shopping and helping others.
It is a good gig economy app to use because you can set your own hours and work a flexible schedule. This makes it a good side hustle for students, retirees, and people who want to earn a little bit of extra income on the side.
You never know when you may need a little extra cash, so it makes sense to sign up for the app so that you are ready to go in the future!
It’s important to understand that as a shopper you are an independent contractor. That means that you hace to pay taxes at the end of the year and track all of your expenses up until year end. Every mile that you drive, you can later expense. But keep in mind that these miles are eating into your earnings. You can increase your earnings by only taking high payout batches and batches that do not make you drive a long time before delivery.
If you’re looking for a second opinion, check out this other review of Shipt.
Some shoppers prefer to shop with Instacart instead of Shipt because of the different pay structure.
On larger batches and further deliveries the Instacart pay structure tends to pay out more.
That’s because Instacart pays Shoppers per item, and per mile driven. They also let Shoppers keep 100% of the customer tip!
